Amsterdam city is located in province of North Holland in west of the country. The metropolitan area comprises much of the northern part of the Ramstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe. Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. The river Amstel ends in the city center and connects to a large number of canals that eventually terminate in the IJ. It is ranked fifth in this category and is only surpassed by London, Paris, Frankfurt and Barcelona the Port of Amsterdam is the fourth largest port in Europe, the 38th largest port in the world and the second largest port in the Netherlands by metric tons of cargo. Amsterdam has the biggest cruise port in the Netherlands with more than 150 cruise ships every year.
